HOUSTON – Widespread showers and thunderstorms produced torrential rainfall across the Houston area Monday, triggering multiple flood advisories and causing street-flooding concerns.

The strongest storms have been capable of producing rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour. Rain falling that quickly can overwhelm drainage systems within minutes, particularly along frontage roads, underpasses and other low-lying or poor-drainage locations.

Although storm coverage should gradually decrease Monday evening, Houston is not finished with the heavy rain just yet.

Tonight’s Forecast:

The widespread storms should mostly wind down through Monday evening, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible overnight.

There could be periods of quieter weather, but any storm that develops will still be capable of producing a quick downpour because the atmosphere remains loaded with tropical moisture. Drivers should continue to watch for standing water and avoid any flooded roads.

Tuesday morning: Heavy rain possible during the commute

Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop Tuesday morning, potentially affecting the morning commute.

Not everyone will experience heavy rain at the same time, but storms will again be capable of producing intense rainfall over a short period. Localized street flooding will remain possible, especially where rain falls over neighborhoods that received significant rainfall Monday.

Give yourself extra time before leaving home, check road conditions and never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway.

Tuesday afternoon and evening:

Showers and thunderstorms will remain widespread at times through Tuesday afternoon. Slow storm movement could allow heavy rain to linger over the same locations, increasing the possibility of isolated flooding.

Clouds and rain will keep Tuesday cooler, with afternoon temperatures only reaching the mid-80s in many locations.

10 Day Forecast

Storm coverage should begin to taper off Tuesday evening, although an isolated shower could linger into Tuesday night.

Wednesday’s Forecast:

Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected Wednesday, and the Weather Prediction Center has placed the Houston area under a Level 2 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall. Locally heavy downpours could again lead to street flooding, especially in areas that receive repeated storms or are already saturated from earlier rainfall.

Storm coverage should gradually decrease later Wednesday, with the hotter and drier pattern taking over Thursday.

10 Day Forecast:

Rain chances drop sharply late this week as a hotter and drier pattern settles in. Highs climb into the mid-90s Thursday and Friday, then reach the upper 90s this weekend, with some locations approaching 100 degrees.

Triple-digit heat index values are likely, and the hot, mostly sunny pattern should continue into at least the first half of next week.
