Houston – Retired Army veteran Matthew “Sarge” Blackwell is turning his love of rugby into a mission to support fellow service members right here in the Houston area. Blackwell joined Houston Life alongside Bill Tatar to talk about the 6th Annual Patriots Charity Classic Rugby Tournament benefiting Camp Hope.
Blackwell, who served in the Army for more than 21 years, said the event was created to help veterans struggling with PTSD and the lasting effects of combat. He shared that Camp Hope provides immediate support for veterans without the red tape many face when seeking help.
The tournament has raised more than $20,000 over the last five years, but organizers hope to raise $20,000 this year alone. The free event happens May 30 at Community Fieldhouse Sports Bar & Grill and will feature rugby matches, live music, vendors, and family-friendly activities throughout the day. The public is invited to show up, have fun, and give back with veterans and their families.
Organizers say the event is about more than rugby. It’s about building community, honoring veterans, and making sure no one fights alone.
