68-year-old dies at St. Joseph Hospital after medical emergency while in custody

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Quang Truong, 68, died Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency while in custody, according to information provided by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Truong was pronounced dead at 5:29 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since Sept. 22. He had been booked into the Harris County Jail earlier this month and was serving a 90-day sentence for failing to register as a sex offender.

The death has been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The Texas Rangers are conducting the outside investigation required by state law in cases involving deaths in jail custody.

The Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is also reviewing whether department policies and procedures were followed. An autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will determine the cause and manner of death, which remain pending.
