MISSOURI CITY, Texas – Crash after crash and bumper to bumper traffic are two major problems the Texas Department of Transportation is targeting when it comes to improving Murphy Road in Fort Bend County. The heavily traveled road runs through Stafford and Missouri City. According to TXDOT, the number of crashes on Murphy Road needs to be cut and to do that they’re putting in a raised median that’ll extend from the Southwest Freeway all the way down to Highway 6. The project will place a continuously raised median along the entire stretch of roadway with designated left-turn lanes at certain intersections. TXDOT says this work should cost about $4 million, using both federal and state funding.

A new agreement between the city of Missouri City and NewQuest Properties sets off the development of Fort Bend Town Center II. Missouri City City Council voted Aug. 5 to execute a Chapter 380 agreement with NewQuest to pay for the new 250,000-square-foot retail center at the corner of Hwy. Under Texas law, a Chapter 380 agreement authorizes municipalities to offer loans and grants of city funds to promote economic development. The citys Economic Development Director Joe Esch said he has been working with NewQuest on this project for the past nine months. The citys economic development incentive package also includes up to $6.25 million in taxes back to the company.

Hakeem Olajuwons Dream Court is one step closer to development. Olajuwons representative, Noble Enloe, spoke to Missouri City City Council on Aug. 5 about the project, which is going into the former Tang City Plaza development off of Hwy. We already have several businesses lined up to rent space.Olajuwon, the property owner, wanted to amend an ordinance to allow for office and warehouse uses as well as commercial uses. His plans call for 19,800 square feet of retail and six buildings for office or warehouse uses among the 9.4-acre development. We are going to start off constructing the two buildings in the back of the property, Enloe said.

Missouri City drivers have a new way to see traffic patterns around the city. The city unveiled its new travel map that shows all of the major corridors, including Hwy. Its a real-time speed map of the citys roadways that includes vehicle travel times, the Dynamic Message Signs and still photos of the citys closed-circuit television cameras, said Kevin Cummings, Missouri City traffic operations manager, in a statement. The IDs are analyzed through an algorithm that is based on roadway speed limits and vehicle speed limits. City staff monitors the map and cameras throughout city limits from the Traffic Management Center located in the Public Works Service Center.

A portion of that tax funds annual city budgets, which pays for operations and services to residents, Missouri City City Manager Anthony Snipes said. Of the 1,664 businesses in Missouri City, only 664 of them generate sales tax revenue for the city, Snipes said. Texas sales tax is 6.25%, and depending on the local municipality, the tax could rise to a maximum of 8.25%.

Drivers passing through four intersections along Sienna Parkway in Missouri City will see some roadwork happen in 2020 amid continued commercial and residential growth in the Sienna Plantation area. Intersection improvements are proposed at Trammel-Fresno Road, Fort Bend Parkway Toll Road, Watts Plantation Road and Sienna Ranch Road, according to the city. Sienna Parkway is the main thoroughfare for the Sienna Plantation master-planned community. There is a lot of traffic there, so we are looking at improvements, including enhancements to signals and lanes, said Shashi Kumar, public works director and city engineer, at the June 17 Missouri City City Council meeting. She said she would like to see Sienna Parkway have three lanes instead of two.

Jump Swim Schools is opening two locations, one in Missouri City at 9101 Sienna Crossing, and one in Sugar Land at 17101 W. Grand Pkwy S. Based in Australia, the boutique facility offers swimming lessons, specializing in babies and beginning swimmers ages 3 months-10 years old. Lessons are given two at a time for a more private experience, said James Rice, head of commercial for Jump. A full closure of the bridge on Glenn Lakes Lane in Missouri City is expected to take place July 29 in order for reconstruction of the bridge near Highland Lakes Drive. Construction is expected to take about 365 days to complete. The city of Missouri City said in a release staff posted signs and message boards along the eastbound and westbound lanes July 15 to alert commuters of the upcoming closures. Renovations to Missouri City Fire Station No. 1 will proceed following the adoption of an interlocal agreement between the city of Missouri City and Fort Bend County. The fire station has hosted Fort Bend County emergency medical services since 2017, which includes two paramedics. Missouri City Mayor Yolanda Ford and DeMerchant worked together on the agreement. DeMerchant identified that keeping EMS housed in Missouri City Fire Station 1 would be the most efficient means of providing for the communities it served, according to a statement from his office.
