HOUSTON – Houston has been chosen as one of the 18 nation-wide stops for the 2020 Hot Wheels Legends Tour. According to a news release, the Hot Wheels Legends Tour is the world’s largest traveling car show where people can see all kinds of custom cars. According to the Houston event page, there will be a fleet of Hot Wheels-esque custom cars, photo ops, a die-cast vending truck, a Hot Wheels kid zone and more. For Mattel, this holiday toy shopping season, the last of the decade, has been all about the "big brands" and "big franchises," according to CEO Ynon Kreiz. New additions to the Barbie brand, which launched with the Barbie Dream House in 1962, include the Barbie Dream Plane and Judge Barbie, which Kreiz said is made to empower girls. The National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York, announced its three inductees for 2019 on Nov. 7. (CNN) - Matchbox Cars and coloring books have entertained children -- and cluttered their bedroom floors -- for generations, and now they're in the National Toy Hall of Fame. The Strong Museum of Play, which runs the hall, announced the 2019 inductees on Thursday. "It's only fitting that they join the Toy Hall of Fame to sit in the winner's circle alongside Hot Wheels, the other titan of the field." The National Toy Hall of Fame was established in 1998 to recognize "toys that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period,"It says anyone can nominate their favorite toy to be considered for the honor.

Shares of Mattel jumped as much as 7% in extended trading Thursday after the company posted a narrower-than-expected loss in the second quarter and reported strong sales of its Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars. Mattel had struggled in the wake of Toys R Us' bankruptcy and eventual closure last year. Notably, this is the first quarter in which shipments to Toys R Us don't affect comparisons. Toys R Us shut all of its locations by June 29, 2018. In the quarter, sales of Barbie rose 9% and sales of Hot Wheels jumped 5%.
