Bus driver in dramatic bridge plunge says it 'just took off'
(AP Photo/Craig Ruttle)NEW YORK โ The driver of a New York City bus that plunged off a bridge blamed the dramatic crash on mechanical failure, saying Saturday that the tandem vehicle โjust took offโ as he slowed into a turn. โThereโs no reason for me to refuse a drug test,โ Beccan, who broke his jaw in late Thursday's crash, said at a news conference following his release from the hospital. The test Beccan ultimately took was done by the hospital and wasn't conducted until several hours after the crash, the agency said. โThe bus just took off on its own.โAs the crash unfolded, Beccan said, he was thinking of the passengers' safety and his own. โEverybody was in a panic.โSeven passengers suffered minor injuries after one part of the bus plunged onto the access road.
MTA: Bus driver refuses drug test after careening off bridge

The 55-year-old driver broke his jaw in the crash and refused to submit to a drug and alcohol test after arriving at the hospital, authorities said Friday. Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said, adding no mechanical issues were detected in the bus. He has more than 11 years of service and a good safety record, the MTA said. The driver passed a breath test at the scene of the crash but then refused to submit to a later drug and alcohol test at the hospital, said Patrick Warren, the MTAโs chief safety and security officer.
Fugitive is killed, 2 US marshals shot in Bronx gunfight
NEW YORK โ A fugitive who shot a Massachusetts state trooper in the hand during a traffic stop two weeks ago was killed early Friday during a gunfight with U.S. marshals in New York City that left two of the officers wounded. The two deputy marshals injured in the 5:30 a.m. confrontation at a Bronx apartment were treated at a hospital and were expected to recover. Andre Sterling, 35, was killed in the shootout and his gun was recovered at the scene. Sterling was wanted for the Nov. 20 shooting of a trooper during a late-night traffic stop in Hyannis, on Cape Cod. Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said the deputies were executing a fugitive warrant his office issued for Sterling when they were confronted with gunfire.
NYPD should stop making traffic stops, attorney general says
Police further heightened tensions by attempting to arrest Feliz on outstanding warrants for low-level offenses such as spitting, littering and disorderly conduct, James' office said. James' office concluded Rivera was justified in shooting Feliz in part because he feared the vehicle's movement was endangering another officer standing nearby, the report said. โThe officerโs alleged justification is a fairy tale,โ said Robert Vilensky, a lawyer for the Feliz family, which is suing the NYPD. James' recommendation is aimed at officers who stop people for things like speeding, seat belt infractions and other issues. โIt is highly unlikely that the incident involving Mr. Feliz ... would have escalated in the manner it did in the absence of this automatic arrest policy," James' office wrote.
