HOUSTON – A 17-year-old has been charged in the fatal shooting of Westbury High School senior LePaul Warren, according to court records filed Saturday.

Travoris Jarrell Hines is accused of shooting Warren on Friday near Dryad Street and Chimney Rock Road, just outside the school and across from its athletic fields.
Warren, also 17, was shot shortly after 8:20 a.m. He was a senior and played wide receiver on Westbury’s varsity football team and shooting guard on the basketball team. Family and friends described him as respectful, polite and well-liked.
Hines was taken into custody Friday evening while walking in the 11300 block of Hillcroft Avenue, Houston police said. Investigators used witness interviews, security-camera footage, phone data, a photo lineup and drone surveillance at a nearby apartment complex to identify him.
Police recovered a weapon but were still determining whether it was used in the shooting. Investigators have not announced a motive. They believe Hines and Warren knew each other in some way and may have connected through social media.
Westbury High School was placed in secure mode after the shooting, although Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said the campus was never in danger. Students were later released to their parents, and counselors were made available.
The school canceled Saturday night’s homecoming football game. Administrators said they are working to reschedule the game.
Court records show Hines also faces an additional charge of unlawfully carrying a handgun.
Hines’ first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 28.
