Woman killed in wrong-way crash on Eastex Freeway after police pursuit of stolen vehicle

HOUSTON – A woman is now dead after the driver of a stolen vehicle reportedly fled from police and crashed while driving the wrong way down a highway Wednesday evening.

The crash took place on I-10 East Freeway and 59 Eastex Freeway at around 8:45 p.m.

Officers with the Houston Police Department said they were attempting to perform a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle but the wrong-way driver fled down Chenevert Street before quickly colliding with another vehicle head-on.

Police said they decided to end the pursuit due to safety concerns, however, the suspect continued.

The woman who was killed was said to have been a passenger, sitting in the backseat of the stolen vehicle.

At least five people were rushed to an area hospital where their conditions were unknown.

The at-fault driver has been taken into custody.
