HOUSTON – You never know when a simple skill could make a meaningful difference. CPR and AED Awareness Week is a reminder that emergency preparedness is not just for healthcare professionals—it is something anyone can learn.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals in the United States each year. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, yet only about 40% of people receive CPR before emergency responders arrive.
There is also a gap in who receives help. Studies have found that women who experience cardiac arrest in public are about 1.5 times less likely to receive CPR than men.
To help raise awareness, Gail Gould, known as the CPR and Safety Lady, teaches CPR and AED skills through classes and webinars designed for everyday people. Her message is simple: You do not have to be perfect to help. You just have to be willing to take action.
Her next webinar is on June 3 and it’s free for anyone willing to learn a new skill—or needs a refresher. Click here to register.
Watch the video above for Gail’s CPR demonstration, AED tips and simple steps that can help you feel more prepared in an emergency.
