HOUSTON – Maven Coffee + Cocktails, located at Sawyer Yards, has quickly become a beloved spot for locals. What began as a simple coffee stand for Houston Astros fans has grown into a vibrant dining destination, thanks in part to the vision of Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and his partner, Juan Carlos de Aldecoa.
This is the newest baby in the Maven family and the biggest space so far Maven Coffee + Cocktails highlights the growth from a small coffee concentrate business to a significant player in Houston’s hospitality scene.
The location itself is steeped in history. Anheuser-Busch once owned Sawyer Yards, de Aldecoa noted, “This was the Silver Eagle Distribution Center, and funny enough, where Maven is, used to be where they washed the trucks.”
As regulars step inside, they are greeted by a unique ambiance that combines the old with the new. The patio offers stunning views of downtown Houston, making it a perfect spot for families and dog owners to enjoy a meal together. “It’s very much a neighborhood spot,” McCullers said, emphasizing the welcoming atmosphere.
Brunch has become a highlight at Maven, with many guests drawn to its coffee roots. However, the dinner menu is equally impressive, featuring a variety of cocktails and dishes that cater to diverse tastes. “We have an amazing dinner and we have amazing cocktails as well,” McCullers said.
Exciting new offerings are on the horizon, including a Sunday paella special designed for sharing among groups. “We’re really, really excited about that,” said Juan Carlos de Aldecoa, reflecting on the personal connections to the food served.
Chef Nico Baizan de Aldecoa, who leads the kitchen, brings a wealth of culinary experience from cities like New York and Chicago. He emphasizes the importance of creating memorable dining experiences through food. “Anything we eat, we’re looking for some sort of experience or some sort of a feeling outside of just good tasting,” he said.
The menu features dishes inspired by the heritage of McCullers, de Aldecoa, and Chef Nico, including a Cubano sandwich and s’mores cups that evoke childhood memories. “Food has been something super important coming back to Houston,” Chef Nico shared, highlighting the significance of culinary traditions.
