Francis becomes 1st pope to endorse same-sex civil unions
ROME โ Pope Francis became the first pontiff to endorse same-sex civil unions in comments for a documentary that premiered Wednesday, sparking cheers from gay Catholics and demands for clarification from conservatives, given the Vaticanโs official teaching on the issue. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered.โWhile serving as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis endorsed civil unions for gay couples as an alternative to same-sex marriages. However, he had never come out publicly in favor of civil unions as pope, and no pontiff before him had, either. Wim Wenders did that in the 2018 film โPope Francis: A Man of His Word.โโFrancesco,โ is more a visual survey of the worldโs crises and tragedies, with audio from the pope providing possible solutions. Instead, Rubin said, Bergoglio urged his fellow bishops to lobby for gay civil unions.
