SPORTS HAVE ALWAYS BEENA PART OF SECOND BAPTIST SCHOOL'S STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH NICK MASCIOLI'S LIFE. Along the way, Mascioli experienced a few injuries, which ended up spurring his interest in strength and conditioning and injury prevention. Over the years, Mascioli's perspective of what it means to be a "strength coach" has changed. "That's where my job at Second Baptist School truly fulfills my passion asa strength and conditioning coach. Although I have had opportunities to train in previous settings, Second Baptist has created this platform better than any other place I have been, and that is what drew me to this school.

She led her team to a state title as a senior and won every tournament she played that year. "He'd work hard all day, while I was going to Hawaii to play a golf tournament. Mark and Drew played multiple sports at Stratford High School and Turner will be a freshman at Second Baptist School. Some don't love tournament golf and posting a score at the end of their round.

As the Director of Athletics for Second Baptist School, Walker, like many, had to quickly pivot his athletic department from in-person, on-campus teaching to being fully online. "I evaluated where we are, mapped out where we need to be and talked through these strategies with coaches," Walker said. "I am really excited about the future of SBS Athletics. The SBS athletics department worked hard to stay connected with each other and their student athletes during the worldwide pandemic, and it looks like their efforts paid off.

I had [SecondBaptist AD Mike Walker] there, teachers from Second Baptist, friends. Mouton is in the midst of his ninth season coaching basketball at Second Baptist School. Throughout the process, Mouton had his family supporting him, and his Second Baptist School family stepped up big by giving him rides to chemo and radiation treatments and even cooking meals. On this Monday afternoon, Kevin walked into the secondary gym at Second Baptist School.

The recent University of Northwestern at St. Paul graduate who was engaged when arriving was named the head baseball coach at Second Baptist School and on the staff for the first football season. He was a former professional baseball player reaching Triple-A within the Houston Astros organization and a former college baseball coach. He was then hired by Wayne Graham at Rice University for three years before going back to UH in 1994 as the head baseball coach until 2010. Being able to come to this environment, being able to teach little kids and coaching high school baseball, it's outstanding." "He came here as an assistant coach and served in that role before being a head coach for SBS.

During Herndon's emotional post-game speech, he and other coaches touched on the fact of the young girls at Second Baptist School looking up to them. As the seniors walk away, their goal is that what they have done and the example they have been to every young girl at Second Baptist School pays off years down the road for the program. "We want Second Baptist School to be a girls' basketball powerhouse," Ryan said. I hope they keep sticking with basketball because Second Baptist is about to be a girls' basketball powerhouse for good."

The 2019-2020 version of the Second Baptist School women's basketball team won't soon be forgotten. Leyla Ertan '21, Kaitlyn Kollmorgen '20 and Victoria Ryan '20 were first-team picks, while Emily Blackmon '20 was named second team. Alyssa Elias '20 and Caroline Torn '20 earned honorable mention nods. "The men's basketball program at Second Baptist School was young and hungry. Cameron Kelley '22 and Helena Platis '22 earned second-team honors and Julia Sauvageau got an honorable mention nod.

THE SECOND BAPTIST SCHOOL CHEER TEAM HAS A LONG TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE. The varsity team finished eighth overall in the traditional large squad category at the TAPPS State Cheer competition. For the Division I Traditional Large Squads, Lindsay Bell ('20) made the first team; Kendall Pennington ('20), McKenna Rodriguez ('20) made second team and Emma Gunn ('21) and MayaLee Dobson ('21) were honorable mentions. Pennington, Bell, Rodriguez, Avery Harder ('21), Emma Bingaman ('20) and Maia Bradford ('20) were named Academic All-State as well.

The Second Baptist School dance team took second overall at the TAPPS Division I 5A Varsity Small Squad State Championships this year. The Golden Girls officers scored Superior in their Small Ensemble performance as well. Director of Athletics Mike Walker says this of Coach Whitehead, "She does a fabulous job as coach of the Golden Girls. After every single football game, the Golden Girls can be seen walking the bleachers picking up trash and throwing it away.

It was quite a year at the Second Baptist School! The football team made the state semifinals, the women's basketball team reached the state championship game, the swim teams showed out at state and the list goes on and on. This 40-page magazine fully encapsulates the 2019-2020 athletic seasons, including honoring the spring sports athletes, who couldn't finish their campaigns. There are amazing features inside this magazine, including one about men's basketball coach Kevin Mouton who opened up about his battle against cancer and the rise of the baseball program. There are tons of amazing photos that were taken at the three Second Baptist School Media Days throughout the 2019-2020 seasons.
