Hundreds of Harmony Public Schools teachers across Houston to receive up to an additional $22K in salary
Harmony Public Schools is proud to announce that 227 teachers in the Greater Houston area are recipients of the Teacher Incentive Allotment, a special fund created to reward the state’s highest-performing teachers.
Harmony educator named high school teacher of year
Teachers, students and staff at the Harmony School of Innovation in Brownsville surprised technology teacher Gungor Sahin with news Tuesday morning that he had been chosen High School Teacher of the Year for Harmony Public Schools’ San Antonio District. Sahin has 77 students in his classes, teaching high school physics and leading Project Lead the Way instruction for middle school students. He teaches a course titled “Computer Science for Innovators,” sending home kits to middle school students participating in distance learning via the internet. A certified teacher, Sahin earned a bachelor’s degree in physics, a master’s in computer science and is pursuing a master’s in educational leadership. Harmony operates two campuses in Brownsville, Harmony Science Academy for pre-k through eighth-grade students on Central Boulevard, and the Harmony School of Innovation for middle and high school students, at 3451 Dana Ave., which opened in 2017 and where enrollment is 540 students.

In appreciation of their extraordinary work in educating the students of Harmony Public Schools while serving their communities during one of the most challenging years for educators ever, Harmony Public Schools will award a $250 bonus to nearly 4,000 employees in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week. Harmony has schools across Texas including some in the Rio Grande Valley. The bonus will be distributed to employees during Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs May 3-7. “We are extremely proud of their efforts during these extraordinary circumstances.”With approximately 4,000 workers statewide, the total commitment of the Teacher Appreciation Week “Three C” bonus will amount to roughly $1 million. In total, these bonuses and benefits upgrade amount to $4.4 million in additional spending on employees in 2020-21 alone.

In an effort to keep students actively involved in extracurricular activities amid the coronavirus pandemic, Harmony Public Schools has launched an online Esports program. Esports, an online competitive gaming program, is a socially-distanced alternative allowing students to collaborate and develop their teamwork skills by providing a sense of community. Harmony Public Schools is offering Esports Clubs and tournament teams granting students the opportunity to compete against other high schools for scholarship money and exposure to college recruiters through the online platform. Additionally, Esports allows students to utilize video games and game development as a way to increase their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), according to a release. According to Harmony Public Schools, students who participate in the program experience academic and social benefits, including an average 28% boost in their GPA and 95% improvement in attendance.
