San Antonio UIL 5A Girls Basketball Previews
Girls Basketball is in full swing, and the San Antonio area schools have a lot to prove coming out of a fantastic 2019-2020 season. Here is a breakdown of our top 10 ranked teams and other notable 5A UIL schools in our area. San Antonio Veterans Memorial (District 26) has a 2020 UIL 5A state championship game finish, a 2018 UIL 4A state title game appearance, a 2019 UIL 5A Region IV final result and a trio of 30-plus win seasons in its first three varsity years. The Patriots plan to move closer to the season's ultimate prize by leaning on first-team all-district athlete Marley Rokas, second-team all-district player Reinha Williams and all-district honorable mention Daelah Edwards this year. Another competitor returning after receiving 1st Team All-District last year is Senior, Makenzee Decock.
Second Baptist School Magazine Feature: Win Today
Emily Blackmon Photo by Bradley Collier of VYPE MediaThe run to a second straight TAPPS Final Four has put Second Baptist School on the map when it comes to women's basketball. During Herndon's emotional post-game speech, he and other coaches touched on the fact of the young girls at Second Baptist School looking up to them. As the seniors walk away, their goal is that what they have done and the example they have been to every young girl at Second Baptist School pays off years down the road for the program. "We want Second Baptist School to be a girls' basketball powerhouse," Ryan said. I hope they keep sticking with basketball because Second Baptist is about to be a girls' basketball powerhouse for good."
FBCA Magazine Feature: Making it Rain
Not to mention, FBCA plays in the District of Doom with the likes of Westbury Christian, Lutheran South and Frassati Catholic. Senior Jared Bohny also earned first-team, all-district honors, while junior Zion Granville earned a second-team nod. With LaRocca, Cole and Granville back in the huddle in 2020-21, Lewis has some pieces to get back in the TAPPS state conversation. Second Baptist reached the state finals, while FBCA fell in the Area Round. Same goes for the FBCA Eagles under the direction of coach Trey Phillips.
