The Bayou Preservation Association helps protect Houstonโs waterways and their wildlife
HOUSTON โ You may not realize it, but there are miles and miles of different waterways, bayous and streams all over Houston. The Bayou Preservation Association stands behind caring for all of those waterways, including some of the wildlife that lives in them. Their mission is to celebrate, protect and restore the natural richness of all 2500 miles of waterways, bayous, and streams, including 22 watersheds. Their annual symposium will be virtual this year, and the theme is โBayou Diversity: Celebrate, Protect & Restore.โ They will have many interesting key speakers and presentations throughout this conference. Watch as Lauren Kelly chats with BPA President/CEO Sarah P. Bernhardt, and TSAโs Eric Munscher about different ways you can help our waterways.
No flooding during Beta in southwest Houston. Residents credit Project Brays for sparing homes from flooding
Project Brays is a $480 million improvement project thatโs been under construction since 2000. Residents in Meyerland and Westbury credit the improvements that including widening the channel and bridge modifications, for sparing their homes from flooding during Tropical Storm Beta. Before Harvey, the majority of the work involved with Project Brays had been finished. While Project Brays protected that area from flooding during Beta, every major rain event in Houston is different. Thatโs the big thinking going forward , thatโs going to take a much larger investment," Hidalgo said.
