BLM sets up student relief fund as loan forgiveness stalls

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation launched a new relief fund Monday aimed at Black college students, alumni and dropouts overburdened by mounting education costs and the student loan debt crisis. The foundation said it set aside $500,000 for the fund and plans to award more than 500 recipients with relief payments ranging from $750 to $4,500. The BLM foundationโ€™s Student Solidarity Fund is an expansion of a previous initiative it started last year as millions of Americans struggled to make ends meet amid economic uncertainty in the coronavirus pandemic.

Green groups sue Trump administration over California drilling plan

REUTERS/Jim Bourg(Reuters) - Two environmental groups sued the Trump administration on Wednesday over its plan to open up more than 720,000 acres (291,370 hectares) of federal land in California for oil and gas development. BLM spokeswoman Sarah Webster said in an emailed statement that the agency was reviewing the lawsuit. The agency issued a new environmental study and resource management plan earlier this month. The plan is one of many ways in which U.S. President Donald Trump has moved to expand oil and gas production on federal lands. Several counties in the area covered by the BLM plan, including Monterey and Santa Cruz, have passed legislation to ban new oil and gas wells.

Trump administration opens up drilling on federal land in California

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Friday announced it would open up over 720,000 acres of federal land in California for oil and gas development, ending a five-year moratorium on leases in the state. The BLM has not held a lease sale in California since 2013, when a judge ruled that the agency illegally issued leases without analyzing the environmental impact of drilling called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Turning over these spectacular wild places to dirty drilling and fracking will sicken Californians, harm endangered species and fuel climate chaos. Counties in the area, such as Monterey and Santa Cruz, included in the approved BLM plan, have passed local ordinances to ban new oil and gas wells. The BLM estimates the oil and gas industry on private and public lands directly supports approximately 3,000 jobs and $620 million in tax revenue in the central California coast area.

Burning Man organizers would fight drug and weapon screenings, will follow attendance limits

Burning Man organizers say they wont challenge the U.S. Bureau of Land Managements plans to cap their attendance at current levels under a new 10-year permit, but they will fight any move toward federally sanctioned screenings for weapons and drugs at the counterculture celebration. These procedures will be carried out in a manner similar to previous Burning Man events, BLM spokesman Rudy Evenson told the Reno Gazette Journal. AdvertisementBLM officials have been careful to call the security measures screenings, which they insist are different from searches. The final environmental impact statement, which details the conditions of the event moving forward for the next decade, would cap annual attendance at the current 80,000. Burning Man organizers said theyd received assurances that trash dumpsters wont be required at the 2019 event, something they say undermines their pack-in-pack-out philosophy and fear would result in garbage piling up around the dumpsters.
