HOUSTON – Harris County commissioners are set to discuss a proposed 2026 tax rate increase aimed at preserving early childhood programming, according to items on the agenda for today’s Commissioners Court meeting.
The agenda item, requested by the county judge, calls for “discussion and possible action” on a proposed 2026 tax rate for Harris County for the purpose of “maintaining a portion of critical Harris County early childhood programming.”
Specific details of what the proposal will include have not yet been released.
The discussion echoes a push made in August 2025, when Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo brought children from a local daycare center to a Commissioners Court meeting to advocate for an early childhood “penny tax” initiative. That proposal ultimately failed to pass.
