UH head football coach Willie Fritz discusses gambling in college sports, expectations for Cougars in 2026

HOUSTON – While attending a University of Houston luncheon with the Touchdown Club of Houston, Cougars head coach Willie Fritz did more than provide an update on the team ahead of the 2026 season.

After Texas Tech football dealt with former quarterback Brendan Sorsby declaring for the NFL Supplemental Draft amid backlash over being allowed to participate in the upcoming season after admitting to gambling on games in which he played, Fritz made it clear he frequently speaks with his quarterbacks about avoiding gambling altogether.

“I talked about it this morning in our team meeting, as a matter of fact. I mention it about once or twice a week,” Fritz said. “You know, it’s tough. I don’t know how many times I’ve called into a radio show and they’re talking about the line while I’m on hold waiting to get on. I mean, 50 times. So, you’ve got to remind your guys over and over and over again about this because it’s a big deal.”

The Cougars will enter the season with two five-star quarterbacks on their roster: returning starter Conner Weigman and Keisean Henderson, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2026.

Fritz said the two quarterbacks have developed a strong relationship and that Henderson is learning everything he can from Weigman, who is projected to be the team’s starter this season.

The Cougars open the season Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. at home against Oregon State.
