HOUSTON – Some crowds got rowdy at the RodeoHouston carnival on Saturday night, prompting an early closure by rodeo officials.
In a new statement Monday, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo said the closures were decided in an effort to prioritize the safety of [rodeo] guests."

Monday, HLSR released a new statement on the situation:
“Saturday night, fights occurred in the carnival area, causing some guests to run and create confusion. Out of an abundance of caution, the carnival closed early to prioritize the safety of our guests. Law enforcement and on-site security responded immediately.
We hold daily meetings with law enforcement and are working with them on an elevated level. Law enforcement and the Rodeo are actively monitoring social media and deploying additional officers as needed. Together, we are taking proactive steps to help ensure this type of incident does not occur again and to maintain a safe environment for our guests."

The Houston Police Officer’s Union had a simple response to the mayhem: a link to a Houston Police Department job application.
What officials told attendees
- Keep teens chaperoned if they attend without adults.
- Talk with children about appropriate conduct and safety procedures before attending.
- Report suspicious or dangerous behavior to the nearest rodeo staff member or a law enforcement officer.
- Establish a meeting spot with family members in case groups get separated.
Rumors online began circulating that a shooting happened, but Houston Police confirmed with KPRC 2 News they have no such record of that happening. Rodeo officials also said there was no gun, despite social media chatter.
A few fights broke out, but those were dispersed by HPD officers.
On Saturday night, Houston Rodeo officials said they closed the carnival “out of an abundance of caution” after a group began running. The situation caused a chain reaction, and more people started running.
“A group of individuals began running in the carnival area, which prompted others nearby to run. Law enforcement engaged quickly and we are not aware of any injuries at this time. Out of an abundance of caution, the carnival closed early. The safety and security of our guests remains the top priority for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.”
