Car badly burned after driver slams into tree in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – A driver in southeast Houston is certainly lucky to be alive after crashing their car into a tree before it went up in flames overnight Monday.

Police said they were called to the South Loop East Freeway near Telephone Road a little after midnight when an unidentified driver slammed into a tree, causing it to get covered in flames.

Our cameras showed how charred the vehicle got, but the driver was treated at the scene and rushed to a hospital in stable condition.

It’s unclear what led to the crash; if wet road conditions or impairment played a factor, the roadway was closed for several hours while officials investigated.

As of this writing, no additional information has been shared, but we’re told the roadway has since been reopened.
