Mom of 17-year-old robbed, stabbed to death walking to work near Galleria area: ‘I keep hoping it’s a bad dream’

HOUSTON, Texas – The 17-year-old woman who was stabbed to death in the Galleria area this weekend has been identified.

Kayla Stevenson was stabbed in the 5100 block of W. Alabama Street around 11 a.m. Her mother tells KPRC 2 reporter Bill Barajas Kayla was working two jobs at The Galleria to support her 6-month-old daughter.

“She was working on a GED at the time and taking care of her little one and had hopes of saving to get a car. She wanted to get her cosmetology license and do her own business,” said Kayla’s mom, Kylie Stevenson.

According to Assistant Chief Wyatt Martin with the Houston Police Department, an officer working extra employment in the area was flagged down and informed that two women were fighting in the area, possibly over a bag.

“My daughter lost her life over a bag. It can’t be that serious,” Stevenson said.

After further investigation, authorities learned Stevenson was walking to work when she was robbed and stabbed multiple times.

Stevenson was found on the sidewalk with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

“She left behind a family that will miss her and loves her very much,” said Stevenson.

Witnesses described the suspect as a woman between the ages of 25 to 35 years old, wearing black clothing and riding a blue cruiser-style bicycle.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or speak anonymously with Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
