Jim Nabors, actor best known as Gomer Pyle on 'The Andy Griffith Show,' dies at age 87

Jim Nabors, perhaps known best as the lovable character Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” has died at the age of 87, according to multiple news reports.

Hawaii News Now reported he died at around 3 a.m., citing veteran producer Phil Arnone. 

Nabors reportedly had been battling health issues for some time.

Nabors was born in Sylacauga, Alabama.

Nabors gained national recognition when he starred as a gas station attendant on "The Andy Griffith Show." He later starred in the spin-off sitcom "Gomer Pyle, USMC."

TMZ reported Nabors also was an singer and a film actor, appearing in movies like "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."

He was also known for singing 'Back Home Again in Indiana' at the Indianapolis 500.



Hawaii News Now reported Nabors moved to Hawaii in 1976, where he was regularly part of the entertainment community and ran his macadamia nut and flower farm in Hana, Maui.

Hawaii News Now reported he was living in Honolulu with his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader.
