Houston – Oktoberfest is underway, and you don’t have to travel to Munich to celebrate.
The annual festival runs from Sept. 19 through Oct. 4 this year, and James Simpson of What’s on Tap Radio joined Houston Life to talk about the beer, food and traditions behind the celebration. Simpson has been hosting the award-winning radio show dedicated to beer for more than a decade.
Oktoberfest is known for its traditional German beers, and Simpson brought four of his recommendations to the studio. The lineup included Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Märzen, Ayinger Oktoberfest, Altstadt Oktoberfest from Fredericksburg and Equal Parts Oktoberfest brewed right here in Houston.
While there are only six official Oktoberfest breweries in Munich, Simpson says there are plenty of ways to enjoy the style outside of Germany, including some great Texas-brewed options.
And you can’t celebrate Oktoberfest without food. Simpson brought pretzels with beer cheese, beer brats and pumpkin beer bread, all prepared by his wife, who shares her recipes on TikTok at @mama.simpson.cooks.
We also learned that a full Oktoberfest stein weighs about five pounds when filled. That led to a little friendly competition to see who could hold one at eye level the longest.
Whether you’re reaching for a traditional German Märzen or a Texas-brewed Oktoberfest, Simpson’s advice is simple: Take your time, enjoy the flavors and drink responsibly.
You can catch What’s on Tap Radio Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. on KPRC AM 950.
