How the UH Mariachi Pumas continue to bring Mariachi to a new generation

Houston – The University of Houston’s Mariachi Pumas are helping keep the rich tradition of mariachi music alive on campus and throughout Houston. Led by director Jose Longoria, the group shares the history and cultural legacy of mariachi while giving students an opportunity to learn, perform and carry the tradition into the next generation.

The program recently celebrated seven years at UH and hosted a summer camp that brought together nearly 200 students from Houston and beyond. The Mariachi Pumas also perform at events throughout the city, including Discovery Green and Houston Grand Opera.

The group will be part of the upcoming Houston Mariachi Festival, bringing musicians from different schools together for a grand finale celebration. Tickets are available now but the festival coincides with Houston Theater Week where attendees can purchase BOGO tickets to over 400 performances throughout the 2026-2027 season. That sale runs from August 24-30. BOGO tickets must be purchased using the promo code HTW26 during checkout.
