Survey finds most workers skip lunch or spend break on screens

When was the last time you actually took a lunch break?

Not eating while answering emails. Not scrolling through your phone. Not squeezing in a few bites between meetings.

Actually taking a break.

A new survey is highlighting how many workers are struggling to step away from their desks during the workday.

Talker Research surveyed 2,000 workers and found 85% of employees say they sometimes skip lunch altogether, while more than half say they spend their entire workday indoors.

But here’s the interesting part: 78% say they’d rather eat lunch outside.

The survey found workers who ate lunch outside reported feeling happier afterward.

The percentage of people who rated themselves as happy increased from 51% before lunch to 66% after eating outside.

And it may not just be the fresh air.

Workers surveyed said they spend about 60% of their lunch break on a phone or computer, meaning many people aren’t fully stepping away even when they do take a break.

Experts say one of the simplest ways to make the most of a lunch break is to actually disconnect.

That could mean putting the phone down, stepping away from the computer, and getting outside — even if it’s only for a few minutes to eat or take a short walk.
