Watch this episode of ‘Eat Like a Local’ today at 10 a.m. on KPRC 2

In this episode of “Eat Like a Local”, host Chris Shepherd shares his picks for hanging out with friends - no agenda, just good food, great drinks, and plenty of laughs.

Hong Kong Food Street | 23015 Colonial Pkwy #A101, Katy

Chris meets his crew at his first stop: Hong Kong Food Street — a former standout in Houston’s Asiatown, that’s now moved to Katy.

After his parents retired, Johnny Cheung reinvented the vibe and some of the menu when he reopened in Katy. And, Chris - a regular at the original spot - is impressed with his commitment to tradition and progress.

When it comes time to order, Chris says there’s no way around it - the best (perhaps only) way is to order a lot! This is family-style dining at its finest, with dishes built for sharing and passing around the table.

Top picks from Chris and his crew are the noodle rolls, crispy pork belly, and Sichuan chicken wings. Chris’ pro tip? Go all in on the duck. Order both styles—the crispy, air-dried Peking duck, and the juicy roasted duck for rich, savory bites. It’s a one-two punch that will have your friends fighting over the last piece.

Southern Yankee Crafthouse | 1312 W Alabama St., Houston

With appetites fully engaged, the crew heads over to Southern Yankee Crafthouse in Montrose. It’s a place where you settle in, order a round (or two), and let the night unfold.

With 18 taps there’s a beer for any palate, but it’s the cocktails that may surprise you. They are just as inventive and fun as the food. Try the Liquid Gold for something completely new or the Cosmonaughty for a twist on a familiar classic.

Meantime, the food keeps things shareable. Crispy pork belly makes another appearance (no complaints from Chris on a double dose of pork), alongside unexpected hits like pickle pizza, a massive hummus platter that’s perfect for grazing, and a rich, comforting chicken mole.

It’s the kind of menu that invites you to try a little bit of everything—and then order more. Chris notes a sleeper on the menu that may be top of the list when it comes to comfort food.
