HOUSTON โ The Houston Endowment awarded Prairie View A&M University with a $1.5 million grant to help increase the hiring of qualified teachers of color, according to a release. The foundation invested the grant into PVAMUโs Whitlowe R. Green College of Education to support the universityโs educator preparation program. Its goal is not only to increase more qualified teachers of color but also to help prepare those educators for long-term success. The grant is part of the $20 million in funds Houston Endowment awarded to several Houston-area organizations that are committed to making racial equity and social justice in Houston a reality. โThe grant will help enhance the quality and distinctiveness of programs and services to best prepare students for careers as accomplished educational professionals.โ
Abbott, TEA offers $1,500 grants for students with cognitive disabilities impacted by COVID-19
The Supplementary Special Education Services (SSES) program allows eligible families of children to qualify for $1,500 to be used in the SSES marketplace. Priority will be given to Texas families receiving income assistance and to families that have documented financial needs. AdFollowing the submission of an application, eligible families will receive an email to create their SSES marketplace account through ClassWallet. โThe SSES program provides crucial academic resources to students with cognitive disabilities and will help close the educational gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,โ said Abbott in the release. โI urge eligible Texans to apply for this funding so that the State of Texas can partner with them and provide more support to Texas students.โ

HOUSTON โ Houstonโs only lesbian bar is now a recipient of a grant that will allow them to stay in business. In a news release Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), in partnership with SHOWTIME announced Pearl Bar and several other bars in the U.S. as recipients of the โQueer to Stay" grant, which supports LGBTQ+ businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. โIt has been a hard road getting through this, but between our community and this โQueer to Stayโ initiative, we are excited to open slowly starting this weekend,โ Pearl Bar said on its Instagram account on Tuesday. As businesses are widely affected by the pandemic due to events such as Pride Month being canceled, widespread revenue losses were reported. โWe deserve to spend our money where we are treated with respect and welcomed from the moment we walk in the door," said bar owner Julie Mabry in a statement.
Despite DNA evidence, Texas court asks for more evidence before exonerating Lydell Grant from 2010 murder
HOUSTON The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals requested additional evidence in the Lydell Grant case on Wednesday. He was convicted and spent nearly a decade in prison before the Innocence Project of Texas helped get the DNA evidence retested. After Grant was released from prison, Carter confessed to the Houston Police Department, and DNA evidence tied him to the crime. The Innocence Project of Texas, who represents Grant, said they provided the TCCA with Carters confession tape more than two months ago. The Innocence Project argues, if it had been, he would have never been charged in the first place, let alone be convicted.
