After 50 years of coaching, and with these last eight years spent with the Houston Texans, Romeo Crennel is retiring.

(AP Photo/Ed Zurga, File)HOUSTON โ€“ Star quarterback Deshaun Watson has requested a trade from the Houston Texans, a person familiar with the move told The Associated Press. The same source who told The AP about the trade request said Watson made the ask before Culleyโ€™s hire. The only other minority candidate who was hired as a head coach this offseason was the New York Jets' Robert Saleh, the league's first Muslim American head coach.

Betting Odds on Next Houston Texans Head Coach

This just in โ€” the Houston Texans were not very good last season. So who will be the one anointed as the fourth full time head coach in franchise history? In fact, the folks at betonline.ag literally want to make it even more interesting by providing odds on whom the Texans will choose as their next head coach. Next, there is no chance they retain Romeo Crennel and make him the permanent head coach, so cross him off. In fact, it appears to be fairly likely that Meyer winds up in Jacksonville as the next Jags head coach.

Bad Texans get mad as losing streak extends to 4 games

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt leaves the field after a losing an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, in Houston. HOUSTON โ€“ The Houston Texans have been bad all season. Sunday was the third time in the past four games the Texans have had a chance to win or tie a game late but lost a fumble instead. โ€œAnd in my mind, for me, he brings a high level of hope for us to be able to win a game. The Titans beat the Texans 42-36 in overtime in Week 6 behind a 212-yard rushing performance from Derrick Henry.

Four Reasons Deshaun Watson Must Start the Final Three Games of the 2020 Season

Before I lay out the reasons why, be sure to note this โ€” if he is healthy, Watson WILL play on Sunday. The all NFL needs teams to treat late season games as meaningfulItโ€™s kind of part of the code of the NFL for teams to put their best foot forward in late season games, even when youโ€™re out of it.

NFL Week 14: Texans-Bears โ€” Four Things To Watch For

Say what you will about the disappointment of a 4-8 season for the Houston Texans in 2020, but there is no denying the fact that they are anything but boring. ), there are still four actual games remaining to be played, beginning with a trip to frigid Chicago this weekend to take on a Bears team that is reeling. Here are four things to watch, other than the thermometer in Chi-town this weekend....4. Typically, when teams have their seasons officially (or at least de facto mathematically) ended, there's a tendency to come out flat the next week. NFL Week 13 Heartbreak: Colts 26, Texans 20 โ€” Four Winners, Four Losers

They lost, again, in confounding, heartbreaking fashion, 26-20 to the Indianapolis Colts, falling to 4-8 on the season. HiltonHilton is a Texans killer, having racked up over 1,500 yards and 10 touchdowns in 16 career games against the Texans coming into Sunday. Yesterday, Hilton was slicing the Texans throughout the first half, with seven catches for 100 yards and the Colts' first touchdown of the afternoon. The Texans bottled him up in the second half, only one catch for ten yards, but the damage was done. Speaking of 100 yard games, the Texans actually had TWO receivers hit the century mark yesterday.

McCown with Texans 19 seasons after hoping to join team

In 2002 the Houston Texans were an expansion team preparing for their first season and McCown had just wrapped up his college career at nearby Sam Houston State. (AP Photo/Michael Perez, File)HOUSTON โ€“ In 2002, the Houston Texans were an expansion team preparing for their first season and Josh McCown had just wrapped up his college career at nearby Sam Houston State. Nineteen seasons and nine teams later, the quarterback finally got his wish when he signed with the Texans this month to be their third quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and AJ McCarron. I followed it closely because it was another team in Texas,โ€ McCown said. Since McCown has been in the NFL since the Texans became a team, itโ€™s no surprise that at 41 heโ€™s by far the oldest player on the team.

Romeo Crennel's Fourth Down Follies In Sunday's Texans Loss

(For the record, I agreed with Crennel's one big decision in that game, going for two up seven late in regulation.) I knew that a field goal would be rough, tough at that one so we popped up the punt. We call it a pop punt by the field goal kicker. Here is Crennel on the decision to eschew a short, potential conversion for a long field goal attempt in a tornado:โ€œI made a decision on the field goal. Discombobulated, the Texans burned their SECOND timeout of the half just so they could gather themselves.

NFL develops 7-point mobility plan for diversity hiring

When the Rooney Rule was adopted by the NFL in 2003, Vincent was in his 12th of 15 seasons as an outstanding defensive back. He was soon to become the president of the NFL Players Association, an impactful position he held for four years. Vincent makes note of the dozens of people who have pushed for diversity in the 17 years since the Rooney Rule was adopted.

NFL Week 10: Browns 10, Texans 7 โ€” Four Winners, Four Losers

Let's start with the actual Texans game itself, as we lay out the winners and losers from Sunday.... Kareem Hunt and Nick ChubbThe story of this game was undoubtedly the second half bludgeoning the Browns administered to the Texans in the run game. The Texans were actually defending the run well for most of the afternoon, allowing 83 yards on 23 carries through three quarters. It's that teams like the Browns, Raiders, Dolphins, Bills, and Colts (all 6-3, except the Bills, who are 7-3) have all shot past the Texans. Those may have come in handy toward the end of the game, except truth be told, the Texans' run defense probably wasn't stopping the Browns anyway.

Texans hope for strong defense in Cleveland

In Week 10, the Texans are in an odd spot. This past week, the Texans unexpectedly fired VP of Communications, Amy Palcic. That may not seem like it has to do anything with football, but it was another indication of the Texans being in bad shape behind the scenes. With how this season has gone, a win in Cleveland would be more than valuable. Itโ€™s going to be a challenge for our defense, but a challenge obviously that weโ€™ll accept.โ€This Browns team can run the ball, and the Texans rank 32nd in rushing defense; a stat that is unsettling heading into Sunday.

Four Potential Trade Destinations For J.J. Watt

Here's Romeo on Monday when asked about Watt being angry:DE J.J. Watt was clearly frustrated after the game yesterday when talking to the media. For the Texans to move Watt, though, it would need to be a collaborative effort, with the team getting input from Watt on possible destinations. The return must be right for the team, as well, but it should be a trade that the Texans and Watt BOTH feel works. If the Texans find a team willing to deal a first round pick, they should fly Watt out private THAT NIGHT. Perhaps they'd like to take this defense to the next level and add Watt to this "Dream Team" vibe.

Which Houston Texans Are Possible Trade Deadline Assets?

Iโ€™ve been informed of some possibilities but nothing definite right now.โ€ Do you think the trade possibilities have become a distraction to the team about their status? I think players like the security of knowing that theyโ€™re going to be on the team and they donโ€™t have to uproot family and move and stuff like that. But like I told the players, Iโ€™m trying to win games and Iโ€™m not trying to trade players. Henry, Titans rally past Texans 42-36 in OT, remain unbeaten

Henry took a direct snap and ran 5 yards for a touchdown 3:30 into overtime and the Titans remained undefeated, rallying to beat the Houston Texans 42-36 on Sunday. โ€œObviously, we all witnessed somebody taking a game over,โ€ Titans coach Mike Vrabel said of Henry. Watson's final TD pass put Houston (1-5) up 36-29 with 1:50 left, but his pass to Randall Cobb on the 2-point conversion attempt failed. Brown on a 7-yard TD pass with 4 seconds left. Astros Fall in Game One of ALCS 2-1: Four Thoughts

After averaging three home runs and eight runs per game during the ALDS, they moved on to San Diego's Petco Park to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS. The Rays took five games to dispatch the Yankees in their series, and it became clear on Sunday night that the Astros took a step up in weight class against the Rays. Despite an early home run from Jose Altuve and out-hitting the Rays 9-6, the Astros just could not muster any runs beyond the one long ball. In addition to the success of the Rays' staff, Astros pitching remained in fine form as well. Tampa remains the favorite on their pitching alone, but their defense, like the Astros, is stingy.

NFL Week 5: Texans 30, Jaguars 14 โ€” Four Winners, Four Losers

A lot has gone down since then, both within the Texans (DeAndre Hopkins trade says "What's up!") Watson tosses 3 TDs as Texans get 1st win, 30-14 over Jags

HOUSTON โ€“ Deshaun Watson threw for a season-high 359 yards and three touchdowns and the Houston Texans got their first win of the season with a 30-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in the wake of coach Bill Oโ€™Brienโ€™s firing. It was recovered by Whitney Mercilus, who fumbled on the return, but the Texans pounced on the ball to keep it. Houston (1-4) pushed the lead to 30-14 when Watson found Brandin Cooks on a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-4 with about five minutes remaining. The Texans were able to overcome two interceptions by Watson by taking advantage of two fumbles by the Jaguars. They entered the game allowing an NFL-worst 181.8 yards a game, but limited the Jaguars to 75 on Sunday.

Texans hoping to get win in their first week without Bill Oโ€™Brien

HOUSTON โ€“ The Texans are preparing for their first game since the end of the Bill Oโ€™Brien era. Houston is 0-4, but hoping for a fresh start and a win over a beatable division rival, the Jacksonville Jaguars. One way to do a better job of tackling is to have live tackling drills. Other than that, no, I think the tackling shouldnโ€™t be too big of an issue more than it is any other year.โ€Does the team think the Texans can turn this around? I think thatโ€™s been good for our leaders on the team to step up and do that.

NFL Week 5: Jaguars-Texans โ€” Four Things To Watch For

This time last week, the winless Houston Texans were heading into a home game against the winless Minnesota Vikings. According to multiple reports, star defensive end J.J. Watt got into a shouting match with head coach Bill O'Brien in the week leading up to the trip to Pittsburgh in Week 3, a shouting match that enough other players internalized as Bill O'Brien finally losing his mind that the head coach "lost the team." Interim Texans head coach Romeo Crennel says he just want to make the team better

HOUSTON โ€“ Wednesday was the first day that Houston heard from the new Texans interim head coach Romeo Crennel. Crennel is now at the helm after former Texans head coach Bill Oโ€™Brien was fired Monday. Crennelโ€™s last head coaching position was with the Kansas City Chiefs. โ€œI think that Iโ€™m just a football coach, and I enjoy coaching and thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m still coaching," Crennel said. Bill Oโ€™Brien fired by Texans: โ€œWe didnโ€™t do enough to get it doneโ€

HOUSTON โ€“ The Bill Oโ€™Brien era is officially over in Houston. McNair didnโ€™t feel a turnaround would occur unless he gave Oโ€™Brien, the teams General Manager since January, his walking papers which he did on an afternoon phone call to Oโ€™Brien. Associate Head Coach Romeo Crennel was tabbed by McNair as the Texans Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season. Here are some of the top quotes from the now former Texans GM and Head Coach. I will leave here with very fond memories of the Houston Texans organization.

3 points from new Texans defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver

In the offseason, the Texans promoted defensive line coach Anthony Weaver to defensive coordinator. So everything weve put in this far, theyve been able to handle, said Weaver. When it comes to focusing on their football-related tasks, Weaver is again confident his team can manage. Having been around these guys, having relationships developed already, thats been a huge advantage. The only pressure I feel is getting our guys prepared to play, Weaver said.

The Texans' defense is in good hands with defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. Last season, the Texans were 12th in overall defense and yards allowed, but on closer examination, things were much better in rushing defense than in passing defense. While Jadeveon Clowney was a big part of the run defense, Mercilus had a career-changing role. Mercilus has made giving back a big part of his NFL career. Mercilus is trying to do his part to lead the Texans to another AFC South title and a return trip to the playoffs.
