Surrounded by several members of the Houston Police Department, Acevedo said he wanted everyone to understand how he came to the decision to leave Houston. Sen. Paul Bettencourt, Crime Stoppers of Houston discuss ‘Caitlynne’s’ bill in honor of woman killed by husband

HOUSTON – Senator Paul Bettencourt and Crime Stoppers of Houston held a press conference on “Caitlynne’s” bill filing on Personal Recognizance Bonds (PR bonds) Monday. The bill would prevent defendants from release on multiple PR bonds. The press conference started at 10 a.m. at the Crime Stoppers of Houston Building and included several community leaders/officials. “Too many of our citizens have become victims of violent crime by habitual offenders who are continually released back to the community often on multiple PR bonds,” said Crime Stoppers of Houston CEO Rania Mankarious. According to Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers, since 2018, 90 victims have been killed in Harris County by defendants released on various PR and low-dollar felony bonds.

Southeast Texas LINK Coalition addresses overlap between domestic violence, animal cruelty

HOUSTON – In response to the rise in domestic and animal violence cases, local agencies are partnering to form the Southeast Texas Link Coalition to combat the abuse. The Southeast Texas LINK Coalition aims to bring together agencies from across Southeast Texas to build a cohesive network that combats both animal violence and human violence. “By launching the southeast Texas Link coalition we hope to prevent, combat, and educate the public on the link between domestic violence and animal cruelty,” said Dr. Malone. A representative of the coalition said since the COVID-19 pandemic began, there has been an increase in domestic violence cases. Animal abuse cases are expected to go up as well.

It could take 3 months to clear Lake Jackson’s drinking water system of brain-eating amoeba, officials say

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – The road to drinkable water won’t be a short one in Lake Jackson after a brain-eating amoeba was found in the water system. The discovery initially led officials to issue a do-not-use order for the Brazosport Water Authority. That was later changed to a boil-water notice for the city of Lake Jackson. Officials said they believe BWA’s distribution system is clean and that the issue is limited to Lake Jackson, where 11 of 54 sites tested there showed low levels of disinfectant. Baker said monthly and quarterly testing records for Lake Jackson show nothing of concern leading up to the discovery of the amoeba.

Mayor Turner to give details on Liftoff Houston Business Plan Competition; $30,000 in prizes available

HOUSTON – Mayor Turner will announce the launch of Liftoff Houston, the City of Houston’s annual business plan competition sponsored by Capital One Bank and administered by the Houston Public Library (HPL) and the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO). The plans will be announced at City Hall at 3 p.m.Turner said winners in three categories – Service, Product and Innovation – will each receive $10,000 from Capital One Bank. Due to COVID-19 concerns, this year all Liftoff Houston events will be held virtually. The program also includes an Educational Pathway, which provides business education opportunities to all who are interested. Houston Public Library Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Office of Business Opportunity Director Marsha Murray and Capital One Bank VP of Business Development Mark Boucree will also speak during the press conference.

Police arrest serial sex assault suspect accused of assaulting women at gunpoint

HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department said they arrested a suspected serial rapist with ties to the Greenspoint area at a Spring apartment complex Wednesday morning. The arrest of 28-year-old Brandon Jay Carter comes after a press conference Tuesday where officers asked for the public’s help in finding him. He uses a pistol, covers their eyes in different methods and uses ties to bound them during the sexual assault,” said HPD Investigator Reagan Daniel. Carter is expected to be charged on credit card abuse and sexual assault in this case. Carter was tied to another assault in July 2019 in 13000 block of Northborough, police said.
