Commemorate 160 years of Juneteenth by exploring historic towns and celebrating community gatherings from Houston to Galveston.

A Houston chef partnered with FritoLay to create the new Doritos Spicy Pineapple Jalapeno flavor, and he is also receiving $50,000 for his initiative that provides meals to an underserved community.

When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the Houston area last year, food shortages in those neighborhoods where access was already limited to fresh and healthy food became even worse.

Lucille’s 1913, chef Chris Williams’ non-profit that has donated more than 200,000 meals during the COVID-19 pandemic, will host its inaugural golf tournament on Monday, April 12, at Hermann Park. Proceeds will benefit Lucille’s 1913 and The Imani School.

Lucille’s 1913, a non-profit run by Lucille’s chef-owner Chris Williams, will donate thousands of meals at food drives in Fort Bend County and Houston’s Fifth Ward on Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, according to a release. At 11 a.m., Lucille’s 1913 will host two Food Distribution Drives in partnership with Fort Bend County. At 2 p.m., Lucille’s 1913 will distribute an additional 1,000 meals at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1510 Pannell St. in Houston’s Fifth Ward. Those who wish to pick up a meal at the Fifth Ward food drive must register and reserve their meal in advance on Eventbrite. Williams founded Lucille’s 1913 last year in response to the emerging coronavirus pandemic.

HOUSTON – Lucille’s is not only known for their amazing food, but their incredible work in the community and this year they are dishing out 5,000 meals to 1,000 deserving families for the holiday season! Lucille’s 1913 Conscious Community Collective invites local families to receive holiday meals at Emancipation Park on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at a drive-thru event facilitated by Lucille’s 1913 in collaboration with Emancipation Park Conservancy and sponsored by the Kinder Foundation. Attendees can RSVP and reserve their family’s meal package by registering on Lucille’s at Emancipation Park Holiday Meal Giveaway on Eventbrite. Driving recipients will be asked to have their vehicle trunks open at the site to receive their holiday meal. Lucille’s 1913 is seeking volunteers to assist with meal distribution and will provide masks, gloves and hand sanitizers for volunteers and staff.
