Southwest Patrol officers responded around 3 a.m. An off-duty officer who was waiting at a traffic light told police the car was traveling about 80 mph as it crossed the intersection, then struck a pole. The impact split the vehicle in two and ejected the driver.

Houston Fire Department crews attempted lifesaving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe the car was an older-model Audi sedan.

Investigators have not determined whether alcohol was a factor. Police said personal belongings in the vehicle suggested the driver may have been returning from a Halloween party, but that has not been confirmed.
