Harris County leaders to explain funding for DA-led probe into fatal ICE shooting

HOUSTON – Harris County leaders plan to speak publicly Thursday afternoon on a new push to fund an outside review of the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an ICE operation in Magnolia Park last month.

Commissioner Rodney Ellis, County Judge Lina Hidalgo and District Attorney Sean Teare are scheduled to hold a media briefing tied to action at Commissioners Court to allocate money for the district attorney’s independent investigation. Araujo was fatally shot July 7 by an ICE officer.

The briefing is expected to focus on the court item itself — how much funding is being set aside, what resources the DA’s office will use, and what timeline the public can expect as investigators work to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

County leaders are expected to speak roughly between 1:16 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., at Ellis’ office inside the Harris County Administration Building.
