Firefighter injured while crews battle abandoned building fire at former Houston school

Crews shifted from an interior attack to defensive operations as they worked to fully extinguish the blaze

HOUSTON – A Houston firefighter was taken to a local hospital after suffering a twisted ankle while crews battled an abandoned building fire late Saturday at a former school on Center Street.

Houston Fire Department crews were dispatched around 11:45 p.m. to the 3200 block of Center Street and arrived to find flames inside the structure.

Firefighters initially went in offensively, then later pulled back and switched to defensive operations.

Crews are expected to stay on scene into the morning to fully extinguish the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
