HOUSTON – Houston city leaders, aviation officials and the family of late U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee gathered Monday at George Bush Intercontinental Airport for the official naming ceremony of Sheila Jackson Lee Terminal E.
The ceremony recognized Jackson Lee’s decades-long impact on aviation, transportation security and infrastructure during her nearly 30 years representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District in Congress.
Why Terminal E was renamed
In April 2025, Houston City Council unanimously approved renaming Terminal E at IAH in honor of Jackson Lee’s public service and advocacy for airport safety and modernization.
During her time in Congress, Jackson Lee served on the House Judiciary, Budget and Homeland Security committees. She also chaired major subcommittees focused on cybersecurity and border security.
City officials said her work helped shape the federalization of the Transportation Security Administration following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and strengthened aviation security nationwide.
Jackson Lee’s impact on Houston aviation
Leaders at the ceremony highlighted Jackson Lee’s role in supporting airport infrastructure improvements and federal investments tied to Houston’s aviation growth.
Officials said her advocacy helped elevate Houston’s standing as an international travel hub while improving safety and passenger operations at local airports.
Family members, elected officials and community leaders attended the event to celebrate her lasting influence on Houston and the nation.
A lasting tribute at IAH
The newly named Sheila Jackson Lee Terminal E now stands as a permanent tribute to the longtime congresswoman’s work on behalf of Houston residents and travelers.
Airport officials said the dedication reflects Jackson Lee’s commitment to public service, transportation access and national security throughout her career.
