HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left an off-duty Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy seriously wounded early Sunday morning at a home in north Houston.
North Patrol officers were dispatched around 1:06 a.m. to the 200 block of Burress Street.
Police previously said they found the deputy inside his home, lying in bed with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Family members, including children, were inside the home at the time.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the man injured in the shooting was a 40-year-old deputy. HCSO said the deputy was asleep when he was shot.
He was transported by Houston Fire EMS to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the deputy is recovering and in fair condition.
The deputy is a three-year veteran assigned to the sheriff’s office Patrol Division, HCSO said.
Investigators said no suspect or vehicle description was immediately available. Officers have been canvassing the area for surveillance video and witnesses, and a motive has not been determined.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477), where tips can be anonymous.
