Happy New Year! Here’s what’s happening in Houston and beyond this morning.
Third Ward party ends in multiple shootings
A New Year’s celebration in Houston’s Third Ward turned deadly overnight. Police say at least five people were shot at a short-term rental near Live Oak and Elgin shortly after midnight. Two victims were taken to the hospital, and several others arrived on their own. Witnesses say more than 100 people were at the gathering.
Fireworks cause massive apartment fire in southwest Houston
Fire crews battled a major fire at Bayou West Condominiums on Club Creek and Wood Fair Drive just after midnight. Video from the scene shows flames shooting from the two-story complex. Fire officials say fireworks likely started the blaze. Around 20 apartments were damaged, and the American Red Cross is helping displaced residents.
Military strikes against narcotics trafficking
The U.S. military conducted two additional strikes against vessels tied to terrorist organizations. Officials report five suspected narcotics traffickers were killed in total.
National Guard withdrawal
President Trump announced the National Guard will leave Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland. Troops may be redeployed in the future, following a Supreme Court ruling that blocked their deployment to Chicago for ICE protection.
Tariff hike postponement
New tariffs on furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities were scheduled for midnight but have been postponed until 2027. The White House cites ongoing trade negotiations as the reason.
