DAYTON, Texas – Two Buddhist monks were hospitalized on Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle on US-90 while walking across the country for peace.
The incident happened on US-90 near SH-99.
According to Dayton police, there was an escort vehicle following behind the monks, who were walking on the shoulder, with its hazards on, when a truck hit the vehicle, pushing it into the monks.

Two monks were taken to a hospital, one of them flown by helicopter with serious injuries to his lower body. The second man had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
The group of about two dozen monks has been on a pilgrimage since Oct. 26, when they set off from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth.
The Walk for Peace, according to the group, is a 2,300-mile walk where the monks would travel to Washington, D.C.
“The Walk for Peace will traverse 10 states on its route to Washington, D.C., stopping at state capitols, historic landmarks, and local communities to share its message and invite moments of reflection and prayer,” a press release from the group stated.
The Walk for Peace team released the following statement on the incident:
The Walk For Peace team confirms that an accident occurred at approximately 6:15 PM today along U.S. 90 near SH-99 Dayton, Texas, involving several monks participating in the Walk For Peace journey. An escorted driver traveling with the Sangha was also involved in the accident.
At this time, we know that some monks and their escorted driver sustained injuries; however, we are still in the process of receiving verified updates regarding their medical conditions. Local authorities and emergency responders arrived promptly, and the monks were transported to the nearest hospital for evaluation and treatment.
We understand the deep concern shared by supporters, communities, and individuals around the world. We are equally worried for the safety and well-being of the monks and are working closely with law enforcement and medical teams to gather accurate information.
