HOUSTON – A Houston barbecue restaurant owner whose business was nearly derailed by theft has experienced an unexpected surge of community support, resulting in thousands of dollars in donations and free repairs.
Paul Jacob III, owner of Jacos BBQ on Houston’s southwest side, received more than $10,000 in donations after news spread about a burglar who scaled his fence and stole his brisket supply last month.

The story caught the attention of radio host Michael Berry and his listeners, who rallied to support the small business.
“Between Michael Berry and his listeners, we’ve received upwards of ten thousand dollars,” Jacob said. “Checks have been brought in from small businesses and all these people are listeners of his radio station.”
The community response extended beyond monetary donations. Local business owners stepped forward to help repair damage from the break-in, including fixes to the BBQ pit and fence—all at no cost to Jacob.
Richard Mazzarino, owner of Mazzarino Construction and Development, contributed significantly after learning about Jacob‘s situation.
“Being a small business owner, starting a small business, sustaining a business is really hard enough as it is... This shouldn’t be one of the reasons that your business shuts down,” Mazzarino said.
Mazzarino’s support included purchasing nearly 1,000 pounds of brisket to help restock Jacob‘s inventory.
Overwhelmed by the community’s generosity, Jacob found ways to give back. He used some of the donations to provide free meals to approximately 250 police officers over two days.
“Words are hard to find right now because I’m so grateful,” Jacob said, reflecting on the outpouring of support from the community.
The wave of generosity continues to grow. Mazzarino plans to purchase several hundred more pounds of brisket for the restaurant this week.
Houston Police continue their investigation into the break-in at Jacos BBQ and encourage anyone with information about the theft to contact them.
