Fans run inside Houston’s NRG Stadium as severe weather progresses before CFP Championship

HOUSTON – Several fans at Houston’s NRG Stadium ran as they were urged to shelter in place while severe weather progressed in the area Monday.

KPRC 2′s Re’Chelle Turner is outside the stadium ahead of the highly-anticipated College Football Playoff Championship, which began at 6:30 p.m.

According to Turner, there wasn’t much rain but wind gusts picked up, knocking over fences and other objects in the area.

Several people went into the stadium and shelter areas and the CFP fan experience was shut down. Workers are taking down equipment as a safety precaution.

The day started with rain and a handful of lightning strikes. A wind advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for northwesterly winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 40-45 mph, Meteorologist Anthony Yanez said.

KPRC 2 will have more updates as they become available.
