Fire engulfs building with popular George Floyd mural in Third Ward

HOUSTON – A large fire caused major damage to a well-known building in the Third Ward known for its popular art, including a mural of Houston native George Floyd.

The fire was reported at the building on Ennis and Elgin Street around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Nearly 40 Houston firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy fire coming from the building. The roof had already collapsed before crews were able to put the blaze out, HFD said. No injuries were reported.

After the fire was extinguished, officials thoroughly checked the area with a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no hidden hotspots.

HFD says there is about $10,000 in estimated damages.
