Suspect in custody after leading officers on chase in stolen U-Haul across southwest Houston, police say

HOUSTON – A suspect is in custody after crashing a stolen U-Haul while leading police on a chase across southwest Houston Thursday, officers with the Houston Police Department said.

HPD said they received information about a man in a U-Haul truck that crashed into someone and shot at them around 1 a.m. Officers later located a U-Haul that was stolen, investigators said.

Officers said they attempted to stop the U-Haul but a pursuit ensued. Police were able to spike the truck’s tires, but the U-Haul kept traveling for over an hour at slow speeds, HPD said.

At one point, police said the suspect was seen throwing out hypodermic needles from the vehicle. The suspect kept driving around the Richmond, Gessner and Westheimer areas. Eventually, officers said they were able to stop the box truck after boxing it in with several vehicles in the 12600 block of Alief Clodine Road. The suspect reportedly kept spinning the tires trying to escape and the rear tires then caught fire, investigators said.

Officers said they broke a window after a few minutes and the suspect exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.
