‘I’m asking every day’: Uvalde mayor says it’s unacceptable not receiving updates on deadly elementary school shooting

UVALDE, Texas – Uvalde City Council members held a special emergency meeting on Tuesday, just two weeks after a deadly mass shooting on May 24 at Robb Elementary School.

Many pushed for answers during the meeting from Mayor Don McLaughlin Jr. surrounding the shooting that killed 19 students and two fourth-grade teachers.

Mayor McLaughlin said the city’s District Attorney has left him in the dark on the investigation and was told they could not brief him because he’s not law enforcement. He said they have asked him to stay out of the investigation.

McLaughlin stated that it has been over a week since anyone has communicated with him about the shooting and this is unacceptable.

“I’m asking every day,” he said.

When asked if the school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo was still on the job, the mayor said he is not aware of his status.

As of now, McLaughlin said they will continue to provide resources and assistance to the victim’s families and will ask the state for those resources.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced on May 31 that a state of disaster has been declared in the City of Uvalde following the shooting.

The disaster declaration in Uvalde allows state agencies such as the Texas Division of Emergency Management to continue making all resources available to respond to the disaster, including providing a temporary facility to be used as a family resource center serving members of the Uvalde community seeking mental health services and other resources.

Abbott also said the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is working with the local mental health authority and the numerous entities offering support to the Uvalde community to provide a single access point for mental health services. Members of the Uvalde community seeking state mental health services can receive help through a single 24/7 hotline: 888-690-0799.
