Houston Newsmakers Feb. 21: Women in surgery, great warrant round-up and buffalo soldiers tribute

Dr. Ronald DePinho says there is a good chance of adding years of life to cancer sufferers because of MD Anderson Cancer Center research. Dr. DePinho is President of the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center and says the Moonshots program started three years ago to attack six cancers has now expanded to aggressively attack 12 cancers  “We have an enormous opportunity,” he said. “It’s important to appreciate that opportunity is real, that we have a lot of knowledge and insight into the disease that can make an impact on patient’s lives.” Dr. DePinho is a wealth of knowledge about the cancer fight, the progress being made and ways you can take control of your own life on this week’s Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.

ALSO----Dr. Mirwat Sami, an Oculofacial Surgeon says too few women surgeons are making from med school into positions of leadership in the medical field. “If you think about it 50% of medical students in the United States are Women but only 32% are I practice,” she said. “What could explain that gap?  I think a lot of it is just a lot of society pressure.” More from Dr. Sami on the problem, the reason for it and solutions.

AND----The 2016 Great Texas Warrant Roundup will start March 5th with an amnesty period between now and then. The Presiding and Associate Presiding Judges of the Houston Municipal Courts are guests this week and say it’s easy to avoid the embarrassment of arrest. “If you get stopped on a traffic violation and you have a warrant, you’re probably going to go to jail and you’ll see a judge at the city of Houston,” said Presiding Judge Barbara Hartle.  Associate Presiding Judge Elaine Marshall says the main priority is to get warrants taken care of, not to take people to jail. “Come talk to us!” she said. “There’s community service. We have a deferred payment plan. We start you off with time to pay. We give you more time to pay. The last thing we want to do is have you incarcerated”

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is celebrating 16 years with a gala on February 26th. Find out more about that event and the Buffalo Soldiers Museum from its Founder and Executive Director Paul Matthews on Houston Newsmakers and from the Newsmaker Extra link below.
