2-year-old Alvin girl mauled to death by family's dog, officials say

ALVIN, Texas – A 2-year-old girl was mauled to death by the family's dog Friday, according to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office.

Officials were called to the 3400 block of Morning Dove in Alvin and found the girl dead, investigators said. When officials arrived, they said the dog, described as a cur mix, was extremely aggressive and had to be tranquilized via dart. It was later euthanized. DNA was taken from the dog, and its exact breed makeup will be determined at another time, the sheriff's office said.

The family told law enforcement that there had never been an issue with the dog's aggression in the past, but they noted it could occasionally become hyper. The girl was taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner's office where investigators will later learn the extent of her injuries, officials said.

Family told law enforcement that they had just returned from a shopping trip and were bringing items inside the house when they left the girl in the front yard with the dog. When they returned outside, the attack had already happened and the girl was dead in the yard, officials said.

Officials said no charges are expected to be filed in the case, calling it a tragic accident.
