The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is holding an oversight hearing in Houston on Friday, focused on recent deadly incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including the fatal shooting of Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

The forum, titled “Seeking Justice,” is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Harris County Commissioners Court. Organizers say members of Congress will hear testimony from Salgado Araujo’s family, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare, faith leaders and community advocates.
The hearing comes after Salgado Araujo, 52, was fatally shot by an ICE officer during an encounter in Houston on July 7.
Federal officials have said Salgado Araujo used his vehicle as a weapon during the incident. His family has disputed that claim and has called for more transparency surrounding the investigation.
The hearing follows a July 15 news conference in Washington, D.C., where U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus raised concerns about two fatal ICE shootings and called for additional oversight.
Lawmakers have criticized the handling of the investigation and have called for an independent review of the shooting.
“This is why we need congressional oversight,” Garcia said at the time, calling for an “independent top-to-bottom” investigation.
Activists and community leaders have continued calling for accountability following Salgado Araujo’s death, with some demanding a broader review of ICE’s use of force.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus hearing is expected to include witness accounts and testimony related to the shooting and concerns surrounding federal immigration enforcement.
