Boy drowns, girl hospitalized after found in pool at Baytown apartment complex, police say

BAYTOWN, Texas – A young boy drowned Wednesday in a Baytown apartment complex swimming pool, police said.

The 6-year-old boy and his 8-year-old cousin, who were known to jump the fence to go swimming, were found in the pool at the Avalon Bay Apartments in the 900 block of Northwood Drive pool around 6 p.m., according to authorities. They were staying with a relative when they headed to the pool, according to authorities.

Maintenance workers pulled the children from the pool, which is guarded by a locked, 4-foot wrought iron fence and wire mesh to keep people out.

Authorities said residents and maintenance workers were performing CPR on the girl for about five minutes before they realized the boy was at the bottom of the pool.

The boy was unresponsive when he was pulled from the pool and CPR was performed before he was flown to a hospital, police said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The girl was responsive and was taken to a hospital. Her condition was unknown.

Police are investigating how the children wandered from a nearby apartment complex, where they live with the girl's mother and grandmother.
