HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Investigators are trying to piece together the events that led to the murder of a middle school student in the Aldine Independent School District.
Local 2 Investigates has learned that 14-year-old Jose Luis Meraz's parents live in Honduras.
He died a mysterious and exceedingly violent death 21 miles from Aldine ISD's Stovall Middle School where Meraz was in the eighth grade.
Meraz's mutilated body was found in the woods by a dog walker early Tuesday morning near Addicks Reservoir.
He lived close to the school with his sister and his aunt.
How he ended up on the opposite side of town, who killed him and why are questions yet to be answered.
The Houston Police Department says the case is under investigation, but a police source says because of evidence at the crime scene, the teen's death may be tied to a gang.
