HOUSTON – One person was killed, and two people were injured after gunfire erupted Monday night in a west Houston parking lot, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police say the shooting happened just before midnight in a parking lot along South Highway 6 near Westheimer Road.
Investigators say dozens of young people had gathered in the area and were preparing to head to a nearby lounge when someone started shooting, sending people running for cover.
According to police, two men in their late teens or early 20s were shot during the incident. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was shot several times and transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Authorities say a woman driving nearby was also hurt when a stray bullet shattered her car window, causing glass to fly into the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
Detectives spent hours overnight collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as they worked to determine where the shots came from.
At this time, investigators do not know whether the gunfire came from someone inside the parking lot or from a passing vehicle in a possible drive-by shooting.
Houston police say they are continuing to canvass the area for surveillance video and additional witnesses as they work to piece together what led up to the shooting.
No arrests have been made.
