CLEAR LAKE, Texas – A Houston-area YouTuber was stabbed at a Clear Lake boat ramp while livestreaming — and he believes sharing his location may have made him a target.
Austin Lewis, known online as Captain Crunch Boats, has built a following of more than 34,000 subscribers and 312 videos documenting boaters launching or loading their boats at local ramps. It’s content that draws plenty of fans — but also, apparently, some enemies.
Lewis says Sunday started like any other day at the dock. Then everything changed.
“I was having a conversation — the boater was yelling from across the parking lot after they pulled out,” Lewis said. “As I was standing there arguing with him, somebody said, ‘Look out’ from behind me. I turned, and as I turned, that’s when I saw the guy behind me with the knife.”
Lewis was stabbed. When he got a look at his attacker, the details stood out immediately.
“I realized he was fully masked up — he had a full balaclava on,” Lewis said. “All I could see was his eyes. He had a black long-sleeve shirt to cover the top of his hands, black pants and brown boots.”
The level of concealment wasn’t lost on Lewis. He believes the attack was premeditated — possibly by someone he had previously featured on his channel.
“It’s very possible,” Lewis said. “I wouldn’t rule it out at all. They were obviously watching the channel, in my opinion.”
This isn’t the first time Lewis has faced danger doing what he loves. He says he has encountered numerous physical and verbal altercations over the years — and this wasn’t even the first time someone pulled a knife on him at a boat ramp.
“This is the second time this has ever happened,” Lewis said. “First time I’ve ever been stabbed.”
The attack has his family on edge — and has Lewis rethinking how he operates going forward.
“My family has a lot of concern for my safety at the moment,” he said. “For right now, I’m not going to be going back down there and doing videos. Whenever I do go back, I’m definitely going to be more cautious about livestreaming. I’ll still go take static recordings, but livestreaming is going to be a hard one.”
The incident raises a broader question for the growing world of content creators — when does filming strangers in public cross into a safety risk, and how do you protect yourself?
According to YouTube’s own safety guidance, creators can take several steps to reduce their risk while streaming. Experts recommend reviewing chat logs for suspicious messages and blocking or reporting offenders, avoiding revealing personal identifiers such as names and locations during streams, using privacy settings to limit who can see your profile and past streams and limiting who can join your stream and view recordings.
Lewis says the attack has changed his perspective — and hopes other creators take note before something similar happens to them.
Authorities are still searching for the attacker. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s office.
