As the school year comes to an end, many parents are searching for summer camps that keep their children engaged while also teaching valuable life skills.
One Houston-area business owner is doing just that by combining cosmetology, creativity, and entrepreneurship into a unique summer camp experience for kids.
The Look Salon owner, Tamika Sturgis, joined KPRC 2 on Tuesday alongside 8-year-old camper Taylor to talk about the program, now entering its sixth year.
Sturgis said the idea for the camp came from her passion for mentoring young girls and helping children explore entrepreneurship at an early age.
Campers participate in hands-on beauty and cosmetology activities while also learning business skills such as branding, confidence-building, and public speaking.
One of the camp’s signature experiences is a “Shark Tank”-style business pitch competition, where campers create and present their own business ideas.
Sturgis said the exercise is designed to help children think creatively, develop leadership skills, and learn how to confidently present their ideas in front of others.
Taylor, one of this year’s campers, said her favorite part of camp is getting to be creative while making new friends.
Sturgis also shared her own journey of leaving a corporate job to pursue entrepreneurship full-time, saying that experience played a major role in building the camp and inspiring children to dream big.
She said teaching kids about entrepreneurship at a young age is important because it helps them build confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills that can carry into adulthood.
The summer camp includes multiple sessions throughout the summer, with activities focused on beauty, business, and empowerment.
